The XBox 360 Graphics Processor

The XBox 360 Graphics Processor
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Mac_Jones]Mac Jones

The XBox 360 from computer giant Microsoft was launched in 2005 as a successor to the original XBox games console. At the heart of every gaming machine are the two main processing elements, the central processing unit (CPU) and the graphics processing unit (GPU). In this article we take a look at the 360's GPU.

The graphics processor is responsible for the picture drawing capabilities of the console and basically takes the raw data from the game and turns it into stunning high-resolution images. By dealing with the bulk of the graphics processing the GPU frees up the CPU to deal with other tasks.

The GPU in the XBox 360 is called Xenos and was custom designed by graphics experts ATI, who have many years experience with PC based graphics cards. Xenos contains two separate silicon chips, each with a clock speed of 500 MHz and sharing 10 MB of DRAM for the main memory. The GPU is manufactured by the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, one of the largest semiconductor manufacturers in the world.

While a 500 MHz processor combined with 10 MB of DRAM provides plenty of power for the 360, the main feature of the GPU is that it uses unified shader architecture.

Shaders are like filters that are applied to the bare 3D objects that have been rendered by the GPU. Their purpose is to make them look more realistic when they are displayed on your screen. Shaders can be divided into two types, pixel and vertex shaders. Pixel shaders adjust the lighting, colour and surface textures of each pixel in order to manipulate the look of 3D objects that are constructed from these pixels. They often serve to smooth out the basic 3D objects to give them a more realistic look.

Vertex shaders process the basic graphics produced by the GPU in order to add special effects to objects in a 3D environment. They do this by performing mathematical operations on an objects vertex data, which is in simple terms its position in relation other objects in the picture, its colour and its texture. By manipulating these values an object can be made to look different to suit the environment it is being displayed in or the requirements of the games developers.

These shaders make billions of computations every second in order to achieve the required output. Traditionally the two types of sharer had to be processed one after the other, meaning complex graphics took at lot of resources to generate. This is where ATI's unified shader architecture comes into play as with this technology both shader types can be processed at the same time. This allows the XBox 360 to process 48 billion shader operations per second, giving it unprecedented graphics processing power on its release.

Xbox 360 Fix - Fix Your Xbox 360 Yourself - No Technical Knowledge Required

Xbox 360 Fix - Fix Your Xbox 360 Yourself - No Technical Knowledge Required
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Chris_Prato]Chris Prato

If you bought an Xbox 360 prior to 2007, there is a good chance that it is not going to last much longer. In fact, it might have already broke down on you. This is a manufacturer defect that eventually happens to all early model Xbox 360, and some later model ones as well. If you play your 360 all the time, it has probably already happened. If you don't play it as much, then it just a matter of time.

The Red Ring of Death

So what happens exactly? Well there are numerous errors that can occur, but the most common end result is the 3 red lights on the power button light ring. This has famously become known as "the red ring of death" and has caused a lot of gamers to become very upset, and understandably. The Xbox 360 is an expensive piece of equipment that should not break down a year or two after being purchased.

Xbox 360 Manufactuer Fix

As the "red ring of death" has become so common, so have proposed solutions to fix your Xbox 360. The most common fix is to send your Xbox 360 back to Microsoft.

If your Xbox 360 is still under warranty, they will only charge you for shipping and will return your Xbox 360 within 8 weeks. If it is not under warranty, then Microsoft will fix your 360 for $140, plus shipping. While Microsoft says they will fix your Xbox 360 if it has been infected with the "red ring of death", they do not guarantee such a fix. So there is a chance that you send in your broken Xbox 360, spend over $140 and have nothing to show for it. This may not be your best option.

The Towel Method

Another Xbox 360 fix has popped up online that a few have had success with, but most have not. It is called "The Towel Method." This method involves wrapping your broken Xbox 360 in a wet towel and turning your console on. You then leave it on for a period of time, essentially overheating your console. Miraculously, this method has worked for some people. But for many others, it has turned their Xbox 360 into a giant paper weight. This method is not recommended and can be very dangerous. (damp towel plus electricity equals potential disaster.)

A Last Resort?

When my Xbox 360 broke, I went on a mission to find the best home fix method, if such a method existed. Sending my console to Microsoft was definitely going to be a last resort. After days of scouring the internet and spending almost over $100 on supposed fix-it methods, I finally found one that worked! Not only did this method work, but it was simple and completely doable by anyone, no technical knowledge is required. In fact, I had my Xbox 360 up and running again in about 45 minutes. I was utterly astounded!

Since I spent so much time and money finding an Xbox 360 fix method that actually worked, I decided to start a website that reviewed different   rel=nofollow [http://www.fixyour360today.com]Xbox 360 home fixes to save others from the trouble that I went through. I update this site regularly and post the top 3 sites that offer the best fix it methods. Check out these sites and you will undoubtedly have your Xbox 360 up and running again within the day. Sure beats spending over $140 and waiting 6 or more weeks!

Be sure to save yourself time and money and visit my [http://www.fixyour360today.com]Xbox 360 Repair Guide review site. There you will find the top rated Xbox 360 fix methods, guaranteed to get your 360 up and running again in no time.

Before You Buy - An Xbox 360

Before You Buy - An Xbox 360
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Jordan_Drew]Jordan Drew

Before purchasing the "next generation" video game, there are a few things that should be taken into consideration.  The Xbox 360 is the latest attempt from Microsoft to control the giant that Sony has dominated for the past several years.  With a three-core IBM processor at it's heart, this thing appears to be a wild animal waiting for it's release.  Without getting too technical, the specs on the Xbox 360 easily eclipses any piece of gaming equipment around today, with the exception of some of the $4k-$5k high-end gaming PC's.

The first decision you have to make is whether or not to spend and extra $100 on the official Xbox 360 or take the cheap way out and grab the "core".   I think you can assume what my recommendation is but for those unaware don't waste your money on the core system.  The core, at a suggested price of $299, includes the system, a wired controller, basic video cables, and that's pretty much it.  For those that chose to be a bit more dollar wise, the $400 Xbox 360 includes the system with chrome details, a wireless remote, a wireless controller, HD component cables, and the 20 GB hard drive.  The latter of the two options would be more than $650 if purchased separately.

The second decision you must make, is if you are going to really jump into the next generation or if you are content with your current television situation.  Personally, I went HD over two years ago and there is not in turning back in my horizons.  At minimum, you need an HD-capable set in order to fully experience what the next generation of gaming has in store.  My current set-up (pictured below) includes my Xbox 360 being displayed on a 32" Olevia Flat-Panel LCD and the picture in one word is MIND-BLOWING.  If you have the finances, don't chinch on what type of display is showing these beautifully rendered graphics.  Just as a test, I set up my 360 on the last "standard" television I have in my home and to be honest, it didn't look to bad.  But once I set it up on my High Definition set, my heart felt at piece and my eyes were finally able to relax and soak in the beauty.   The level of detail on an HD set compared to traditional makes the Xbox 360 a must have for ANYONE that has and HD television.

The last thing to consider is the game lineup.  I purchased my Xbox 360 the day it launched (how is another story) and with it I bought: Madden 2006, Call of Duty 2, Need for Speed, Perfect Dark Zero and NBA 2K6 (I'm not rich, it's called credit).  To my surprise Perfect Dark Zero and Call of Duty 2 quickly stood out as the better games graphically and had pretty good game-play.  If you've ever played a first person shooter such as Halo, there shouldn't be any problem popping these in without much of a learning curve.  NBA 2K6 is definitely a must-have and is leaps and bounds better than it's Xbox predecessor.  Madden and Need for Speed were pretty disappointing considering they seemed to be ports from the original Xbox and nothing more.  The line-up, as of now, is still in its infancy and is not enough to make you HAVE to own this system immediately.  However, I'm a gaming nut and I would have been extremely disappointed had I not had this system on launch day.

Recommendation:  Purchase this system as soon as it is financially viable.  The killer apps are in the pipeworks!

Playstation Portable 3000 - Giant Step Above the Rest

Playstation Portable 3000 - Giant Step Above the Rest
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Alan_Peirano]Alan Peirano

After the Playstaion Portable 1000 came the PSP 3000 and is already a giant step above the rest of the competition. It has only been on the market for a few months. The PSP 3000 has abut seven different designs. Each design will fit different customers needs. The seven different versions range from $170 to $200 depending on the version and the different frills each has on them.

The PSP 3000 has a very slim dimension and weighs in at only seven ounces. The screen is a 4.3 inch LCD and has a lot better color reproduction and less glare than the PSP 1000 and 2000. New to the PSP 3000 is the built-in microphone located just below the screen. It can be used for online communication and can also be used for Skype communication applications. With the microphone already in the console you can use headphones with the 3000. If you don't want to use headphones the PSP does have external stereo speakers. The volume is alright but nothing spectacular. As I mentioned just a moment ago the PSP 3000 has a built in Skype client so you can call free Skype to Skype or calls to and from regular phones.

The PSP does have a built in Web Browser. The downfall is that while on the web the pictures and graphics get contorted and isn't something to wright home about. The pages are broken on the screen and lines are running through the picture. The PSP is designed to play games and movies. They load into the PSP into a snap door on the backside of the console. How it looks to me is that Sony is moving more towards the down loadable games and movies. Again I would like to point out that the PSP is primarily a gaming device.

What I think is cool is the Video output. You can invest in some addon cables and plug them into your television and play your games on a bigger screen. The picture is actually pretty good. I thought it might get contorted by going from something so tiny to the big screen, but that was not the case with mine.

I guess in conclusion, what I'm trying to say through out this article is the PSP 3000 is a step above the rest of the competition for now. The Playstation Portable is primarily for playing games on the go. I hope this writing has helped you understand the world of portable gaming.

Hello my name is [http://www.pspvideogamer.info]Alan and I've enjoyed writing these articles for Ezines. I would like to think I'm becoming an expert with the video games section. I am becoming an expert because I watch my son and grandsons play these games and the excitement of watching the competition is most enjoying. They really get after it. It truly is fun to watch them and I even get in on the playing quite a bit of the time. Right now I would like extend the invitation for you to come to my [http://www.pspvideogamer.info]website and check out what I have to offer in games and accessories in the video gaming. See you there in a few moments.
